Does your toddler or preschooler struggle with matching numbers and numerals? My little one can easily count to 20 out loud, but now we’re focusing on recognizing those numbers in written format. It’s time to match up those numbers with a fun preschool finger paint counting activity! Number recognition is one of the first building blocks to help a child understand math. Starting around the preschool age, your child will be able to learn that written numerals stand for a certain number of objects. Every child learns at her own pace, so just remember to keep positive and don’t give up if it doesn’t come easily to your child. Repetition is key, just keep trying! We whipped up this low-prep preschool number activity to help with just that. Throw in some finger paint and it’s a number counting party! Preschool Number Activity: Counting with Fingerprints! First, grab some paper plates. We are focusing on the numbers 1-5, so we used five plates. If you’re going higher up to 10, just add more plates! You can adapt this finger paint counting activity as needed to suit your child’s ability level. Write a number on each plate and set them out before your child. Love number activities? You are going to be both counting on your fingers and stamping them to make fingerprints at the same time. Of course my little girl asked for pink paint! We painted each fingertip bright pink. Show your child how to stamp her fingers on the plate one at a time. Count out loud and point to the numeral as you stamp with the finger paint. Plate number one gets just one thumbprint. One! Plate number two gets one thumbprint and one finger print. One, two! Continue on, adding a fingerprint each time. You may have to add a bit more paint on her fingers as you count. When you get to plate number five, she’ll stamp all five fingers together! My daughter learned how to count on her fingers long before she recognized numbers. I love this activity because it’s a great bridge between counting on fingers and identifying numerals. It’s a great tactile way to reinforce number values. Finger paint for the win! Extend Your Counting with Finger Paints Activity After the counting finger paint dries, use your plates to encourage more number sense and numeral recognition! Point and count to the finger prints that have already dried. One, two, three, four, five! Mix up the plates. Have your child put the back in correct number order. She can use the finger prints as a clue if she doesn’t recognize the numeral right away. Hold up numbers with your fingers and let your child find the matching plate.
