Sweden emerged victorious in the battle for third place at the 2023 Women's World Cup, defeating Australia with a 2-0 scoreline.
The match took place in Brisbane, where the Matildas aimed to conclude their impressive World Cup journey on a positive note.
Spearheading the Australian offense was Sam Kerr, while Hayley Raso had the most promising opportunity in the opening quarter.
Positioned unmarked at the back post after an excellent setup by Caitlin Foord, Raso's attempt was thwarted by Zecira Musovic's save around the post.
Sweden, too, had their chance to find the net, capitalizing on a penalty opportunity after Stina Blackstenius was fouled in the penalty area. Fridolina Rolfö converted the spot-kick to give Sweden the lead.
In the second half, Sweden further solidified their position, with Kosovare Asllani's superb strike from outside the area doubling their advantage in the 60th minute.
