Intel's 13th-gen processors are faster, cheaper, and more efficient than ever

The company revealed a truckload of new CPUs at CES

To kick off the Consumer Electronics Show, Intel pulled the curtain back on its latest generation of computer processors this morning. The new range boasts all the kinds of improvements you'd expect (faster speeds! lower power usage!), as well a few surprises.

The standout of the announcement is arguably the new Core i9-13980HX laptop processor, which boasts a whopping 24 cores (8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores) with a turbo clock of 5.6GHz and all the bells and whistles you could ever want -- including DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 support, Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, Wi-Fi 6E, and boosted integrated graphics performance. Expect to see it pop up in high-end gaming laptops later this year.

On the other end of the spectrum, Intel also announced a handful of new budget-friendly N-series processors, which are designed for education and consumer segments that need a low price, but still require performance and high-quality experiences for things like video calls and productivity.

And that's just the high and low ends of Intel's offering. There's a bunch of exciting stuff in the middle of lineup, too.

BUSINESS

2022 Was a horrible year for startups

And unfortunately 2023 isn't looking much better

According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, tech startups had a rough year in 2022 by practically every metric.

For starters, there weren't nearly as many startups formed in the past year as there were in 202. On top of that, the ones that did launch (or were already established), gathered far less venture capital than in previous years. And among existing startups, so few of them went public this past year that the market for IPOs had its worse year since 1990.

Generally speaking, this startup slump is a reflection of the tough economic times we're living in. Rising inflation and ever-climbing interest rates are making it harder to acquire the capital needed to get businesses off the ground, all while supply chain disruptions and shortages are making it harder to do business in the first place.

The big takeaway? Until things start to turn around economically, startups will likely need to change their tactics, stay lean, and figure out ways to be cash-flow positive without relying so heavily on investors.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

3G cellular service is officially dead and gone in the United States

It's the end of the road for the tech that started the mobile revolution

You probably didn't notice, but 3G died quietly on the last day of 2022 as Verizon -- the last major network provider to support the standard -- pulled the plug on the technology.

It wasn't without warning, though. Verizon initially planned to sunset its 3G CDMA network back in 2019, but instead opted to delay until 2023 to give customers ample time to prepare and upgrade. That grace period has come to an end now, and Verizon's 3G service has been completely shut off for all customers -- effectively ending 3G's run in the United States.

The good news is that all that spectrum space is being repurposed to make way for 5G. So shortly after you pour one out for 3G, you can raise your glass and toast to progress.

We highly recommend ...

James Nolan Gandy is an artist, but he doesn't make his works himself, technically speaking. Instead, he builds elaborate drawing machines that create intricate geometric sketches that look like Spirograph doodles on steroids. If you check out his Instagram page, you can catch videos of the process as it unfolds. Just be warned: this stuff is utterly mesmerizing to watch and you'll almost certainly burn 10 minutes gawking at the machines as they scrawl out big, beautiful spirals.
