Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) said he "vehemently" disagrees with Trump's statements, saying they should be a factor as Republicans decide who should lead their party in 2024. The White House also weighed in, saying, "You cannot only love America when you win." [AP]
U.S. 'ACTIVELY' WORKING ON BRITTNEY GRINER, PAUL WHELAN RELEASE FROM RUSSIA Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. is "actively" working to secure the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan, two Americans imprisoned in Russia. Blinken said the U.S. put forward a "significant proposal" months ago. "We've been engaged repeatedly, in any way that we can, to try to advance it," he said. Russian media said the U.S. has offered up a notorious arms dealer in exchange for Griner and Whelan. [HuffPost]
SHOOTINGS AT POWER SUBSTATION CAUSE NORTH CAROLINA OUTAGES Two power substations in a North Carolina county were damaged by gunfire in what is being investigated as a criminal act. The damage has left tens of thousands without electricity and could take days to repair. [AP]
BIBI NETANYAHU STILL WAITING FOR TRUMP TO CONDEMN ANTISEMITISM Trump's failure to condemn antisemitism and to distance himself from antisemites like Kanye West and the prominent white supremacist Nick Fuentes he dined with last month is "just wrong," Israel's returning prime minister Bibi Netanyahu said. "I hope he sees his way to staying out of it and condemning it," Netanyahu added. [HuffPost] | | | | | | BOTH SIDES SEE HIGH STAKES IN GAY RIGHTS SUPREME COURT CASE The Supreme Court is being warned about the potentially dire consequences of a case this week involving a Christian graphic artist who objects to designing wedding websites for same-sex couples. Most experts predict that the court, now dominated 6-3 by conservatives, will side with the Denver-area designer in the case — a ruling that liberal groups said would expose not only same-sex couples, but also Black people, immigrants, and others to discrimination. CHRIS CHRISTIE'S NIECE KICKED OFF PLANE AFTER ACCUSING PASSENGERS OF SMUGGLING COCAINE A niece of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was kicked off a plane in New Orleans last month after she asked passengers she believed were Latino if they were drug smugglers, according to law enforcement authorities. Airline staff reportedly asked that Shannon Epstein be removed from the plane as she became increasingly "irate," and the plane returned to the gate. She reportedly boasted as she scuffled with deputies that she was related to powerful people. [HuffPost]
BIDEN COULD BE MISSING OUT ON HIS BIGGEST CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITY Within days of taking office, President Joe Biden set an ambitious goal to conserve 30% of U.S. land and water by 2030. Many viewed formal protections for neglected backwaters like those in southwest Colorado as some of the lowest-hanging fruit toward reaching this goal. But nearly two years after Biden took office, many conservationists worry the Bureau of Land Management, historically tied to industry and hobbled by Trump, is moving too slowly. [HuffPost]
PRINCE HARRY HITS OUT AT 'BASELESS' STORY THAT PITS 'HIM AGAINST HIS COUNTRY' Prince Harry is shutting down a recent report that accused him of telling a friend "Those Brits need to learn a lesson" ahead of the couple's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey last year. The global press secretary for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told HuffPost's Carly Ledbetter "this is a baseless hit piece masquerading as journalism," adding that the story is "riddled with inaccuracies." REPUBLICANS DEPLOY THE BUDDY SYSTEM TO SAVE HERSCHEL WALKER Few candidates have gotten as much help on air and off as Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker. When Walker participates in nationally televised interviews, he's often joined by one or two GOP senators who get just as much or even more speaking time than him. Democrats argue the buddy system Republicans deploy for Walker's interviews drives home their argument that the former football star is unprepared and unserious ahead of Tuesday's runoff election.
