MARIJUANA REFORM IS A POLITICAL SLAM DUNK THAT CONGRESS COULDN'T HANDLE While major marijuana reform was always unlikely to move through Congress, it was equally unlikely that Joe Biden, one of the nation's biggest proponents of the Drug War during his time in the Senate, would wind up the president to try to effectively legalize marijuana and extend selected amnesty to Americans harmed by the War on Drugs. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT THINKS TRUMP IN POSSESSION OF MORE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS: REPORTS Justice Department officials have reportedly demanded in recent weeks that any classified documents remaining in former President Donald Trump's possession be returned. BELARUS, RUSSIA, UKRAINE HUMAN RIGHTS CHAMPIONS WIN PEACE PRIZE Jailed Belarus rights activist Ales Bialiatski, the Russian group Memorial and the Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties have won the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. The judges wanted to honor "three outstanding champions of human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence" among the neighboring countries. [AP]
HURRICANE IAN EVACUEES RETURN TO MUD, RUBBLE AS DEATH TOLL CLIMBS Residents of Florida who had to evacuate their homes due to Hurricane Ian are returning to assess the damage to their properties, despite limited access to some areas. The number of storm-related deaths continue to rise, more than a week after the storm made landfall in southwest Florida. [AP]
PROUD BOYS MEMBER ADMITS TO SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY IN JAN. 6 CAPITOL ATTACK A North Carolina man has pleaded guilty to plotting with other members of the far-right Proud Boys to violently stop the transfer of presidential power after the 2020 election, making him the first person from the extremist group to plead guilty to a seditious conspiracy charge. ILLINOIS COUNTY JUST LAUNCHED THE NATION'S LARGEST GUARANTEED INCOME PROGRAM The second-largest county in the U.S. just launched what officials say is the biggest guaranteed basic income pilot program in the country. Cook County will send up to 3,250 eligible residents $500 a month in cash assistance for two years, becoming a leader in the movement for universal basic income. [HuffPost]
BEN SASSE IS RESIGNING FROM THE SENATE Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is the "sole finalist" to be president of the University of Florida and plans to resign from the Senate in the coming months. Sasse isn't up for releelection until 2026, and will therefore have to appoint a replacement.
