Now there are always certain teams that are always going to be talked about by the media no matter if they're good or bad. We always hear about the New York Yankees in baseball, the Los Angeles Lakers especially with Lebron James on the team in basketball and in football it's the Dallas Cowboys. Now New York and Los Angeles are major coastal cities and I think that attributes to the discussions about those teams, but Dallas doesn't fit that category, but they're always the football team that people seem to want to talk about even though they haven't been a Super Bowl contender for quite some time.
Now interestingly the Cowboys were the talk of the weekend after they picked up their first win of the young NFL season 20-17 over the Cincinnati Bengals.
This was the first game that the Cowboys played without quarterback Dak Prescott who is out with a broken thumb. Depending on who you listen to Prescott will either be back in six to eight weeks or four weeks like Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said.
Cooper Rush made the start at quarterback for the Cowboys. Rush went 19 for 31 for 239 yards and threw one touchdown. What is probably the most important stat that Rush posted was he didn't turn the football over.
After the win I found it quite interesting that there were people in the media who suggested that the Cowboys would be better off with Rush as the starting quarterback instead of Prescott. Now unsurprisingly they didn't really give a reason for this, but I guess just getting a win was enough for them to make them feel this way.
Now Rush did look better in his start against Cincinnati than Prescott did in his start Week #1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Tampa Bay does appear to have a better defense than Cincinnati does.
Now I understand that there are a lot of fair-weather fans out there and I wonder if they actually think that the Cowboys should stay with Rush as the starting quarterback over Prescott.
Rush and the Cowboys have a couple of winnable games the next two weeks. In Week 3 Dallas plays the Monday night game in New York against the Giants, who are 2-0. In Week 4 Dallas is at home as they host the Washington Commanders. I'm not sure if either of these games will tests Rush's ability at the quarterback position but come Week 5, we should get a chance to see where he is at.
Week 5 has the Cowboys on the road to face the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams and then in Week 6 the Cowboys face what is likely their toughest division opponent as they're on the road to play the Philadelphia Eagles. These two games should give us a better idea of what kind of a quarterback Rush is.
So let me know what you think about this situation. When Prescott comes back healthy does he go right back in as starting quarterback? Or do you think that the Cowboys should stay with Rush as their starting quarterback?
Now I don't honestly watch a lot of tennis, but I know who the players are, so this week when Roger Federer announced his retirement it caught my attention.
Federer is 41 years old and is a 20-time Grand Slam champion as he walks away from tennis hoping to play one more match at the Laver Cup.
Federer is interested in playing one doubles match and has a partner in mind, Rafael Nadel his longtime friend and rival.
The Laver Cup is a team competition between Europe and the rest of the world in which players usually have to play at least one singles and doubles, so they'd be tweaking the rules a little by allowing Federer to play in just one doubles match. Of course, if there's a player that they should adjust this rule for its Federer.
The Laver Cup is this weekend if you're interested in catching Federer's last match, you'll have to check your local listing and see which network will be showing it.
