Today we discover what it's like trying to find a happening party in the metaverse, and report on how we could soon be enjoying lightning-fast internet speeds. We also find out why NASA is closing down SOFIA, its observatory on a plane, after more than a decade of space exploration. More details below! |

The era of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) internet has moved one step closer to reality, with Comcast announcing that it has successfully tested record download and upload speeds.
Through a demonstration that was performed via a 10G connection on a live network, the company said it was able to hit download speeds faster than 8Gbps, while upload speeds reached a level exceeding 5Gbps.
Comcast and other broadband providers are utilizing 10G technology in their quest to deliver "multigigabit symmetrical speeds" to the consumer market. It says it can accomplish this without changing existing infrastructure by tapping into connections "already installed in tens of millions of homes and businesses worldwide" ... |

A few Saturdays ago, I went to a nightclub. I dressed a bit on the casual side, donning a multicolored sweater, jeans, and sneakers. When I arrived, it was nighttime and the sky was purple, dotted with stars and wisps of cloud. I heard the booming music before I entered and there was no line at the door. It seemed fairly standard and strangely reminiscent of careless pre-COVID times, but I wasn't going to a club in the real world — I was going clubbing in the metaverse.
The nightlife industry is expanding into the metaverse, with clubs, music festivals, and parties popping up in various virtual platforms. My first stop was Decentralande, one of the largest and busiest virtual spaces in the metaverse ... |

NASA has announced it will end operations of its observatory on a plane, SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy). The mission, which is a collaboration with German space agency DLR, will come to a close at the end of its current mission extension on September 30, 2022.
SOFIA is a modified Boeing 747 airplane that flies at altitudes of over 7 miles, which is above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere. That allows it to observe without the water vapor distorting readings, and it has been fitted with instruments for looking in the mid to far-infrared. It has imaged beautiful nebulae and researched how stellar winds play a role in star formation, but its most famous finding was that there is liquid water on the moon's surface ... |

TIPS, TRICKS, & TECHNIQUES |
by Parker Hall and Quentyn Kennemer |
On the A/V awesomeness scale, few components compete with the subwoofer. There's just something primal about a box made for the sole purpose of rattling your bones and delivering low tones. We think everyone should have at least one — but two is better. Unfortunately, as awesome as subwoofers are, they can also be mighty fickle.
Unless you've got a firm handle on the science of acoustics and a deep understanding of how your A/V equipment works, placing and setting up a subwoofer for optimal performance can sometimes wind up being a case of trial and error. Though it is impossible for us to anticipate and respond to the myriad variables that your distinct room will introduce (things like floor type, ceiling type, room dimensions, etc.), we can point you in the right direction.
Here's what you need to know ... |
