Tampa Bay is already vulnerable to storm surge. The risk is only growing
Dear Tampa Bay Times reader, | Good morning. Looking for a story to pair with that cup of coffee or tea? We just published Part 1 of our newest series, Rising Threat, online at tampabay.com. The report dives into the unique risk of storm surge flooding in our region. Even weak tropical storms can cause destruction. As seas rise, the threat will spread. In late 2020, Tampa Bay got a preview when Tropical Storm Eta hit at high tide, churning up several feet of flooding. The damage shocked people who expected a glancing blow. Using Eta as a lesson, the Times partnered with the National Hurricane Center to model the same storm with potential sea level rise by 2050. The results show how much worse the surge could get in just a generation. | | | | Times journalists Zachary T. Sampson and Langston Taylor spent parts of two years working on this series. Their reporting took them across Tampa Bay and Florida, from the Panhandle to the Space Coast. They interviewed more than 100 people, broke down vast data sets and worked with scientists to run complex computer models. Projects like Rising Threat are only possible with support from readers like you. Please consider subscribing to our journalism. | | | | |
