Apple Announces the Launch of Lossless Audio for Apple Music

Posted: 17 May 2021 01:46 PM PDT

Apple is bringing two major updates to Apple Music, including support for high-quality, lossless audio and for spatial audio through Dolby Atmos. Moreover, the features will be free of cost for all subscribers, including those on family and student plans. Apple is starting off with 20 million lossless audio songs in its catalogue, which it plans to extend to 75 million by te end of this year.

Lossless audio will be a subscription-only feature, according to Apple. The company also added that music purchases will not be offered in lossless quality, nor will there be a way to upgrade owned tracks to lossless with the paid iTunes Match service.

The latest version of Apple Music is required to run lossless audio. The option can be found in Settings, under Audio Quality. Users will be shown different resolutions for different connections, like cellular, Wi-Fi, or for download, that they can choose from.

Lossless audio starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz, and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz natively on Apple devices. However, in order to enjoy the highest-quality "High-Resolution Lossless" experience, subscribers will have to rely on an external equipment like a DAC.

The Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos audio, on the other hand, are expected to provide more immersive mixes for users listening through the latest AirPods or Beats headphones that come with the H1 or W1 chip.

Spatial audio can also be played via the built-in speakers on the latest versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac by default. The option can be manually enabled for other headphones by visiting Settings and selecting "Always On" for Audio and set Dolby Atmos.

Devices that can support the Spatial Audio feature include all of those launched by Apple within the last few years.

World's top remittance recipient countries

The Covid-19 pandemic has been hard for every single country on the planet and therefore, the global remittance flows have been highly resilient than expected especially for the low to middle-income countries.

The World Bank data reveals that the total remittance is predicted $702 billion in 2020 which was 2.4 percent down as of 2019 ($719 billion). However, out of the total $702 billion, around $540 billion is expected to be received by the low or middle-income countries. In 2019, the low and middle-income countries received a total of $548 billion which is 1.6 percent more than that of 2020.
Despite a lower inflow of remittance, a few countries increased it substantially during the Covid-19 crises. As the infographic shows, the biggest global remittance recipient is India that received $83.1 billion in 2020 which is still 0.2 percent less than the country received in 2019.

Followed by China and Mexico with $59.5 billion and $42.9 billion, respectively. China got 13 percent less than 2019 whereas, Mexico received 9.9 percent more of the remittance inflow as it got in 2019. Other countries that are included in the top ten remittance recipients include Pakistan and Bangladesh as well.

Surprisingly, some developed countries are also seen in the list including Germany and France. But, the remittance flow is not as important to these countries as it is to other underdeveloped or emerging ones.
