Everything You Need to Ditch Cable on a Budget

Read in Browser

March 15, 2021

Happy Monday! How’s DST treatin’ ya? Losing an hour of sleep never seems like a big deal in theory, but the time change always messes with my brain for like a week. I woke up at 9:30 yesterday morning wondering why I slept so late. Then I realized—because it felt like 8:30 (which is still late by my standards!). As I write this, it’s 12:23 and I can’t figure out why it’s so late. Can we just abolish time changes already?

If you’ve been considering cutting the cord but don’t want to spend a ton of money to do it, today’s featured post is for you. We’re taking a look at everything you need to ditch your cable company on a budget. That means streaming devices, free streaming TV, and ways to save some cash if you do have to pay. It’s a good one, y’all.

Other highlights:

  • We reviewed the Govee Aura Table Lamp, which is a very cool little smart lamp. We also have an exclusive coupon code for 20% off in the review.
  • Scientists have found a way to spot deepfakes using AI. It’s very cool stuff.
  • The OnePlus 9 might come with 50-watt fast charging, which is insane..
  • …and more!

Everything You Need to Ditch Cable on a Budget

Ditching cable for streaming is easier than ever, even if you’re a sports fan or a sucker for live broadcasts. But as streaming prices rise to cable-like levels, the question is no longer “can you replace cable with streaming,” it’s “how can you ditch cable on a budget”? Here are the free services, streaming bundles, and OTA equipment you need to cut the cord without breaking the bank. Read More »

Apple May Announces AirPods 3 Soon, With a Makeover

Over in the rumor front, details about a possible third-generation AirPods are brewing heavily. So far, we’ve seen leaks that suggest that AirPods 3 (if that’s the name) will get a redesign inspired by AirPods Pro. The current Airpods have a long stem that sticks far out of the ear, while AirPods Pro stems are much shorter.

Leaked pictures suggest the latest AirPods update could pick up the shorter stem and a rounded body similar to AirPods pro. That calls for a redesigned case that may look like a cross between the current AirPod case and the AirPod Pro case. Shorter and wider, but not as much as the Pro case. Some rumors suggest that new AirPods will pick up silicone tips, but the leaked pictures seem to contradict that. We also don’t expect to see any of the more advanced features from AirPods Pro make it to the standard AirPods, like active noise canceling.

The swirling rumors say that Apple may announce the new set of AirPods on March 23. But analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple won’t begin manufacturing until Q3 2021. It’s unusual for Apple to announce a product that isn’t ready yet (anyone else remember AirPower?), so we’re treating that rumor with caution. We’ll find out if and when Apple announces the latest AirPods, perhaps on March 23.

Of Course NVIDIA’s Attempt to Limit Cryptocurrency Mining Immediately Failed

Last February, NVIDIA announced it would purposely make the RTX 3060 graphics card terrible at cryptocurrency mining. The hope was to push miners away from buying up all the graphics cards and drive prices. Less than a month later, it’s possible to unlock the RTX 3060’s mining capabilities. The only surprise is that the necessary drivers came directly from NVIDIA. Read More »

Apple’s Original HomePod is Dead, Long Live HomePod Mini

Four years after its launch, Apple has officially discontinued the full-sized HomePod. Despite its stellar sound quality and HomeKit integration, the $350 HomePod (now $299) failed to meet Apple’s sales goals due to its high price, limited streaming service support, and incompatibility with most smarthome devices. Apple is now focusing on the smaller, $99 HomePod Mini, which came out at the tail end of 2020. Read More »

OnePlus 9 Might Pick Up Absurdly Fast 50-Watt Wireless Charging

It’s nice not to fiddle with a cord, but a wireless charger is always slower than a cable. But OnePlus may want to close that gap even more than it already has with its next phone series. According to leaks, the OnePlus 9 may support 50-Watt wireless charging, far above the average 15 watts most smartphones support. Read More »
