MoJo Reader,
There aren't many people who inspire me more than the Reverend Dr. William Barber II, and I'm thrilled to invite the Mother Jones community to a special event with him and his remarkable daughters, moderated by MoJo's own Nathalie Baptiste, this Thursday, February 4.
Join us at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT for what promises to be an incredible discussion. We're asking for a suggested donation of $10 when you sign up, but times are tough, and if that prevents you from joining, email events@motherjones.com and we'll do everything we can to make sure anyone who wants to attend can. You're probably familiar with Barber: Back in 2013, he helped build a multiracial, multi-issue coalition whose "Moral Mondays" protests in North Carolina grew into a national movement—the Poor People's Campaign—to confront "the interlocking evils of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism."
Wow. Sign me up for that!
Better still?
Thursday's event is going to be a family affair because Barber will be joined by his daughters for a rich discussion that cuts across so many of the challenges our nation faces. Dr. Sharrelle Barber is a social epidemiologist at Drexel University whose research focuses on the intersection of place, race, and health, and Rebekah Barber is a researcher and writer, at the Institute for Southern Studies, on issues of racial justice, democracy, and Southern history (all while earning her master's in public policy).
What a family. Join them and your fellow MoJo readers on Thursday, February 4, at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m PT for this not-to-be-missed discussion.
Not that you need more convincing, but I also have to shout out my colleague Nathalie Baptiste, who will be moderating the discussion. She joined the MoJo team as an editorial fellow in our DC bureau back in 2016. She's now a reporter and columnist (as well as co-chair of Mother Jones' union). As Editor-in-Chief Clara Jeffery wrote when announcing Nathalie's promotion, "Her work has been both searing and sassy, which is hard to pull off, and she's added great voice and point of view, particularly around racial justice and the various forms of perfidy trying to impede it."
Is it Thursday yet?
I'm so much looking forward to this incredible panel and I hope you'll be able to join us at 2 p.m ET / 11 a.m. PT. If the $10 suggested donation is a barrier to entry for you, just drop a line to events@motherjones.com and we'll do everything we can to make sure you can join.
Thanks for reading, and for everything you do to make Mother Jones what it is. Bridget Botelho Director of Communications Strategy Mother Jones
