The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Pot One for the African qualifiers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
The recent rise in Nigeria's FIFA ranking has earned them a spot alongside African powerhouses such as Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Tunisia, Cameroon, Mali, and Egypt in Pot One.
Africa is guaranteed a record-breaking nine slots in the World Cup, with each of the above-mentioned countries drawn into nine groups comprising six teams each. The group winners will automatically qualify for the tournament. However, the four best runner-up teams will face off in a CAF playoff tournament, with the winner advancing to the FIFA Playoff tournament. This could potentially secure Africa a total of ten teams in the World Cup.
Having missed the chance to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria now has a better opportunity to secure their seventh appearance in the prestigious tournament. The draws for the African qualifiers are scheduled for Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
