The erosion of civil rights by this conservative-majority Supreme Court continues apace with two profoundly detrimental rulings. The first backed a Christian web designer's refusal to work on same-sex weddings, paving the way for businesses to openly discriminate against LGBTQ people across the country. The second arrived moments later with the rejection of President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan. Both follow the court's decision on Thursday to end affirmative action programs in higher education, which will assuredly lead to a precipitous decline in Black and Latino admissions. Together, these decisions once again demonstrate, with sharp clarity, the cruelty doled out by six conservative justices who enjoy virtually unchecked power on the highest court in the United States. If you're feeling demoralized, all I can say is this: Despite this madness, powerful and exceedingly empathetic people are in your corner, including Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson. I urge you to read their dissents for the simple yet potent reminder that forces of good do exist—and they're taking on Clarence Thomas' BS head-on. Now, will reading dissents be enough to fight the relentless garbage that keeps flowing from this Supreme Court? What will it take to reverse these pernicious judicial decisions? How can we support the everyday people affected by them? I don't have all the answers, but it's time to scream: Pack the damn court. Take care of yourself this weekend. —Inae Oh |
