| | [The National Hurricane Center] | | Tropical depression strengthens to Tropical Storm Arlene | | A tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico was upgraded to Tropical Storm Arlene this afternoon, making it the first named storm of the season. Arlene was about 265 miles west of Fort Myers and had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph with higher gusts, according to a 1 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Arlene arrives just a day after the official start of the hurricane season on Thursday. Forecasters expect the storm to weaken soon due to wind shear and dry air. Read the full report.
