When Minneapolis shelter dogs need exercise, these volunteers come running

Get the latest on Updraft. 🎙️Coming up on Morning Edition : A young man who grew up on the Red Lake Reservation revolutionized snowmobile design. While working at Polaris, Andy Wells — then just 20 years old — came up with a design to move the engine from the back of the sled to the front. Polaris wanted to keep him, but Wells decided to combine his two biggest passions — engineering and helping others — to create a free apprenticeship program. 🎧Coming up at 9 a.m.: Alcohol use and misuse among women is on the rise and it's causing severe health problems for some women. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a researcher who studies sex differences in alcohol use, and a drug and alcohol counselor who specializes in women's addiction. When Minneapolis shelter dogs need exercise, these volunteers come running A program at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control lets trained volunteers borrow a dog to go out for a run. It gets everyone — whether they have two legs or four — out for fresh air, and can give the dogs a better chance at a successful adoption. "Every dog gets out every single day. Most of our dogs get four to five walks a day, they get enrichment, they get training. We're really building these dogs up to be forever family members." What else we're watching: Wells Academy founder creates spaces for Indigenous workers. A Red Lake Band member who has made it big in the engineering world has long tried to give others a helping hand.  Now, Andy Wells has taken things one step further by launching an engineering internship in the community center on the Red Lake Reservation. Hourly school workers now eligible for summer jobless benefits in Minnesota. For years, workers pressed lawmakers to make the change and to cover them the same way that unemployment insurance covers other seasonal workers. They faced opposition from school administrators, school boards and Republican lawmakers who raised concerns about the potential cost of growing the pool of potential applicants. Picture book makes sense of the pandemic, with help from four Twin Cities illustrators. MPR News producer Emily Bright spoke with the four illustrators based in the Twin Cities metro area: Freeman Ng, Annie Kuhn, Alicia Schwab and Sara Nintzel. 14 different illustrators from across the country contributed to the pictures.  Music programs in Minnesota prisons aim to make change. The Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop and Radical Reversal are providing access to recording equipment for incarcerated people.   Minnesota carpenter helps rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral roof — with medieval-era skills.
