Apple's VR Headset Could Immerse You in Sports

In the future, you might feel the magic of the arena atmosphere.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

I haven’t shared this with you yet, but I am an avid sports fan. Before coming to CNET, I was a sportswriter for several years. I absolutely loved the fast-paced environment, but more importantly, I loved how unpredictable each game, match and meet was. The story was always different. I lived for the chaos and excitement.

My favorite sport to watch is ice hockey, so I’m loving that the NHL playoffs are happening now (especially since I’m a Carolina Hurricanes devotee and Boston Bruins hater). As hockey fans know, playoff hockey is absolutely electric. It’s not enough to simply watch the upsets, the gritty overtime periods, the highlight reel-worthy goals. I need to be fully immersed in it.

Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks that way. My colleague Eli Blumenthal has written about the potential of Apple’s VR headset to alter the way we consume sports. Rather than just watching sports on the screen, or even in multiscreen view (a feature offered to Apple TV 4K owners), Apple could make it possible to enrich the viewing experience and completely immerse fans in the arena by streaming games in virtual reality. For now, this is just a dream of what the future could bring, but I can’t wait for the day when I can witness a slap shot whizzing by me in a rink-side view.
