I'm technically still on vacation. So my loafing mind is far away from the real world and, instead, still very much thinking about the series finale of Succession. Though at times I found the show frustrating and overly reliant on recycled insults, the ending, with its exquisite portrayal of the core Roy sibling dynamics and down-to-the-wire tension over who would finally win, was as pitch-perfect as you can get. I genuinely can't think of another finale that was at once so deeply satisfying, poignant, and blisteringly funny. One of my favorite takeaways memorializing the show has been Kurt Andersen's piece celebrating how Succession, unlike any other prestige television show before it, artfully mirrored real-time events, including the 2020 election, without ever feeling like a lazy commentary on our unhinged times. Will it ever stop feeling so bonkers? Probably not; it seems we are stuck in hell. But at least we had some good television along the way. —Inae Oh |
