Dish Network knocked offline for days by suspected ransomware attack

Many of the company's services have been down since Thursday

Late last week, satellite internet and TV provider Dish Network experienced a significant outage that knocked the company's apps, websites, customer service systems, internal servers, and telephone systems offline. While company spokespeople haven't confirmed the exact cause of the issue, details of the outage suggest that it might be a ransomware attack. The outage is now on its fifth consecutive day

In a statement, a Dish spokesperson said: "We experienced a systems issue with our corporate network on February 23 that is affecting our internal servers and telephone systems, and the issue is being investigated. Our DISH TV, Sling TV, Wireless services, and data networks continue to operate and are up and running. However, some of our corporate communications systems, customer care functions, and websites were affected. Our teams are working hard to restore affected systems as quickly as possible and are making steady progress."

Dish employees told Bleeping Computer they are seeing "blank icons" on their desktops, which is a common symptom of a ransomware infection that has encrypted files.

According to a Dish employee who spoke to BleepingComputer, one manager said the incident "was caused by a known threat agent," and is working with an "external vendor" to fix the outage.

Snapchat plans to launch a new in-app chatbot service powered by ChatGPT

The catch? It's only available to paid subscribers right now

Popular messaging app Snapchat is introducing a new chatbot feature powered by the latest version of OpenAI's ChatGPT. The feature, called "My AI" will be pinned to the app's chat tab, and allow users to interact with AI from the comfort and convenience of their smartphones.

During a recent earnings call, Snap CEO Even Spiegel explained the reasoning behind the move, saying that he believes that AI chatbots will become a common part of everyday life. "The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we're going to talk to AI every day," he told the Verge. "And this is something we're well positioned to do as a messaging service."

For the initial rollout, My AI will only be available to Snapchat Plus subscribers, but Spiegel says the grand plan is to eventually make the chatbot available to all users for free.

An ignition issue caused SpaceX to scrub today's planned Crew-6 launch

The next launch opportunity is on Thursday, March 2.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was scheduled to launch NASA's Crew-6 mission to the International Space Station earlier this morning, but the launch was called off just 2.5 minutes before the countdown timer reached zero.

Why? According to NASA commentator Gary Jordan, who was hosting the agency's launch live stream, SpaceX was experiencing issues with the rocket's ignition system. "Teams were tracking a ground issue with TEA-TEB — that's the ignition fluid that actually sparks with the oxidizer and allows the engines to fire," he said during the stream.

Unfortunately, this means SpaceX's rocket – and the four NASA astronauts who were headed to the ISS aboard it – will likely have to remain grounded for a few more days, as the weather at Kennedy Space Center in Florida won't be favorable for a launch until Thursday, March 2.

Announced at Mobile World Congress, the OnePlus 11 Concept sports the same internal specs as the OnePlus 11, which launched earlier this year, but includes a new active cooling technology dubbed Active CryoFlux.

Active CryoFlux is meant to keep the OnePlus 11 Concept cool while it's charging or being used for GPU-intensive gaming. It speeds up charging times by 30 seconds to 45 seconds and can keep a game's frame rate and overall performance consistent without significantly increasing the device's weight or size. It does so by pumping cooling liquid through the pipelines on the back of the OnePlus 11 Concept, which can reportedly lower the phone's temperature by over 35 degrees Fahrenheit while gaming.
