Gernot Rohr, the former head coach of the Super Eagles, has agreed to a three-year contract with the Benin Football Association to take charge of the national team, the Squirrels.
Rohr is taking over from Moussa Latoundji, who was the interim coach after Michel Dussuyer was sacked.
This is Rohr's fifth time coaching an African team, having previously managed Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria.
In an interview with Punch Sports Extra, Rohr confirmed his appointment and said he is excited about the challenge of rebuilding the team with young players.
"I signed a three-year contract with the Beninese Football Association.
"It's an interesting mission to rebuild a team with younger players."
The Squirrels' first match under Rohr's leadership will be against Rwanda in March, as part of the 2023 AFCON qualifier in Group L.
Benin are currently last in Group L after two losses in their opening two games. Senegal leads the group with six points, while Mozambique occupies second spot with four points. Rwanda are third with one point.
"I will be in Cotonou soon to prepare the next match against Rwanda.
"It's a real challenge that I have accepted. We have to try and get something to revive the team."
During his tenure as the Super Eagles coach, Rohr led the team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and a third-place finish at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
