Ever Heard of a Forbidden Planet?

It shouldn't exist... but it does.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

If I think too much about outer space, I get freaked out. The idea of rogue black holes, time dilution and 200 billion other galaxies in our universe is actually mind blowing. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the sheer scope of the cosmic beyond, and when I try to, I just become dumbfounded.

Don’t get me wrong. I love learning about space and the solar system. I can spend hours at a planetarium or the National Air and Space Museum in DC, but I can’t help but feel so tiny and insignificant, and I can’t help but be astounded by the many anomalies of the universe. For instance, like this recently discovered “forbidden” planet.

It’s unusual for a large gas giant planet to orbit a small red dwarf star. In fact, this outlier actually challenges our understanding of planetary formation. I don’t know the ins and outs of astronomy, but I do appreciate having my CNET colleagues on the science team to dissect all the breaking news regarding the ether so I don't lose my mind.

Keep reading for all this, plus so much more.
