A blue I hadn't
seen before
mesmerized my soul
she controlled the walls
my heart had softened
with a tongue kiss
her lips, that cherry
essence, my mind can't
negate in case
I conclude my mind
changed with worry
in my voice.
Forgive me.
It's not you, you see,
it's just that when
I study my soul
in the mirror
my reflection, it doesn't
change.
Like sulfur, my words
burn with anxiety
my heart, an emaciated
shadow of its erstwhile,
cavern ego — purified
by skinny dipping in
an estuary of sentiments
that led us back
together after years
things return us here
to kiss beneath a
skeletal hickory tree
in early 2023.
