Can a person really change? I never believed that was possible until I made a New Year’s resolution one year that totally altered my reputation.
In my early 20s, I was known for being flaky. I’d make weekend plans with people and cancel them last minute. I’d get so busy that I forgot to do things I promised to do, like pick up a friend from the airport – yikes.
I hated how much I was disappointing my friends. So one January, I made a bold proclamation: I wanted to become a more reliable person. That started with some basic steps: checking my calendar before committing to a social engagement (I was too lazy to do this before) and being OK with saying “no” (this was hard for me as a people pleaser).
I followed these steps until I became the kind of person who showed up to parties if they RSVP’d yes, who rarely double-booked their weekend plans -- and if they did, canceled far in advance. If you knew my former self, you’d know this was a minor miracle!

I won’t lie, my road to becoming a more reliable person was not easy. I essentially had to form a new set of habits to help me remember my commitments and stick to them. But I did it. And so can you.
