Microsoft has plans to integrate ChatGPT into its Bing search engine

OpenAI's tech could help Microsoft better compete with Google

When it comes to search engines, Bing has always played second fiddle to Google, but Microsoft reportedly has an update in the works that could change that. According to a report from The Information, Microsoft has plans to release a new version of Bing that uses ChatGPT to answer search queries.

The idea is that with the help of ChatGPT, Bing could provide humanlike natural-language answers to queries rather than just a big list of links to websites. This functionality would help Bing compete with Google's Knowledge Graph, a knowledge base that Google uses to serve up instant answers to simple questions.

If all goes as planned, Microsoft could roll out the new feature before the end of March.

The latest trend in tech? Killing unnecessary meetings

More and more tech companies are adopting policies to ban them

Earlier this week, the Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify announced that it's conducting an internal "calendar purge" and nixing all recurring meetings with more than two people "in perpetuity." On top of that, it's also banning any meetings of any kind on Wednesdays, while encouraging workers to decline additional new meetings and remove themselves from large chat groups.

And the best part? Shopify isn't alone. Over the past couple of years, more and more tech companies have implemented no-meeting days in an effort to free up employee schedules and boost productivity. Facebook parent Meta adopted the practice in 2020, as have other big firms like Atlassian and Twilio.

The trend has been picking up in tech and beyond for the past few years, and for good reason. A recent study from MIT found that companies that banned meetings three days out of the week experienced a whopping 73 percent increase in productivity.

Let's hope this catches on!

Crypto firm Coinbase agrees to $100M settlement with NY regulators

But only half of the settlement is an outright fine

The New York State Department of Financial Services recently reached a $100 million settlement with Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange platform in the world, following an investigation into the cryptocurrency exchange's compliance program.

In a nutshell, NYDFS's investigation found that Coinbase violated New York's financial services and banking laws by not conducting background checks on new users, which is part of the state's anti-money laundering requirements.

But only half of the total settlement amount will be used to pay New York's fines. The other $50M will be reinvested into the company to correct deficiencies in compliance programs, and ensure that this doesn't happen again in the future.

STAFF PICKS

We highly recommend ...

If you want a flagship phone with industry-leading cameras, multi-day battery life, or lightning-fast charging, there are plenty of other options for you to choose from. But if you're OK sacrificing some of those things for a design unlike anything else, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the best in its class. It's not the most technically impressive phone in every single category, but it's stylish, adorable, and fun in ways that traditional slab smartphones will never be able to match. And the areas where the Flip 3 struggled — such as battery life and charging — are noticeably better on the Flip 4. Combine that unique approach with precision execution in so many categories, and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 stands tall as one of my favorite smartphones of the past year. No matter how boring it's supposed to be.
