Curing Screen Addiction the Hard Way

Don't try this at home. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

It’s the last day of January, and that means you're wondering how the first month of 2023 flew by so fast -- and what on Earth happened to your New Year's resolutions. You’re not alone. I’ve been struggling to keep up with resolutions myself.

A few newsletters ago, I wrote about how I want to decrease my screen time outside of work hours. I tried. I really did. But during an unfortunate bout with an upper respiratory infection, I subscribed to HBO Max and spent the last three weeks flying through all the shows I’ve been meaning to watch. (Yes, House of the Dragon is as good as everyone says it is.)

While I binged my way through my streaming catalog, my CNET colleague Laura Hautala
cured her screen addiction following a concussion. I don’t want to induce a concussion -- and she doesn't recommend that -- but her recounting of the experience culminates in some compelling ideas about the importance of avoiding stimulation and embracing the quiet. I’ll certainly give it a try.

You can find this, and so much more, in today’s Insider newsletter.
