🏫 3 tips on teaching podcasting to young people

We’re at the end of January, meaning it’s been nearly a month since we opened this year’s Student Podcast Challenge – how time flies! I’ve so far listened to a range of entries, and something that stood out to me is that we have a handful of stories from Portland, Ore.! Will I be traveling to Portland this spring to visit our winner? Only time will tell 😊 This week, I wanted to share some guidance for teachers, educators and mentors who are submitting their students’ work. Whether you’re planning one class or multiple sessions on audio storytelling, we’ve got LOTS of resources for teaching podcasting to young people. Newsletter continues after sponsor message Below are some of my favorites, and you can find our resources page for teachers here: 🎧 Podcasting overview: First time entering the Student Podcast Challenge? Open your lesson with simple questions about podcasting – like “What is a podcast?” Or “What would you like to hear on a podcast?” 🧠 Choosing a topic: Share the following prompts with students and ask them to discuss one or two they’re most interested in and why: Tell us a story about your school or community. What do you want to change about the world? What is a moment in history that everyone should learn about? Explain something that you understand and older adults don't. Show us both sides of a debate about an issue that's important to you. Remember, this year, we’re introducing a special award for the best student podcast about mental health. So, if you’re struggling to choose a theme, it’s not a bad idea to take our suggestion! (But no pressure, of course!) 📓 Planning the story: Year after year, teachers have asked us for tips on actually getting their students to tell a story, rather than reading their homework out loud. Mapping out student podcasts could really help! Here are prompts students could ask themselves: What is my story's driving question? How will I ensure my story is fair to the people and ideas it represents? What will the audience remember when it's over? Click for more teaching resources! Hope these help!
