ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Disney's AI tech ages actors with ease

And it's way more efficient than existing methods.

If a movie actor needs to be aged or made to look younger in particular scenes, Disney's new AI software could save filmmakers a lot of time.

While it's currently possible to make changes to an actor's face using 3D computer graphics software, or by using a makeup artist to make adjustments manually, both methods are extremely time-consuming.

Disney's extraordinary production-ready AI technology, however, predicts the specific parts of a face susceptible to change before producing extremely realistic aging and de-aging adjustments in high resolution. This video shows it in action.

Once fed with the input image, the technology can automatically adjust the same face throughout the rest of the footage, taking just five seconds per frame.

If needed, artists can still add the final touches, but the technology looks set to help Disney reduce production budgets while also saving huge amounts of time with movies that require such changes.

Apple ramps up development of its mixed reality headset

It's likely to go up against Meta's new Quest Pro headset

Apple is speeding up the development of its mixed reality headset, people with knowledge of the matter have told Bloomberg.

The tech giant is aiming to launch the headset as early as next year, together with a dedicated operating system and an app store for software to use on the device, the sources said.

Apple has reportedly changed the name of the headset's operating system from "realityOS" to "xrOS." This is apparently a nod to the headset's mixed reality capabilities, as XR stands for "extended reality," which covers both augmented and virtual reality.

As Bloomberg notes, Apple's reported push to get the headset to market will be noted by Meta, which recently trumpeted its latest plans for the metaverse with the release of its premium mixed-reality headset, the Quest Pro.

Tesla finally delivers its first all-electric Semi truck

Elon Musk did the deed at a special event on Thursday night

Five years after it was unveiled, Tesla boss Elon Musk finally got to deliver the automaker's all-electric Semi truck to the first customer.

Musk turned the occasion into a big event, livestreaming the launch from Tesla's Nevada Gigafactory on Thursday night.

"If you're a truck driver and you want the most bad-ass rig on the road, this is it," Musk told the crowd.

The first customer, Pepsi, has ordered 100 of the hefty Class 8 trucks, which have a range of 500 miles and a top price of $180,000.

The vehicle sports a sleek design and, notably, places the steering wheel in the center of the cab with touchscreens located on either side of the driver.

Musk has said previously that he wants to see production of the Semi ramp up to 50,000 vehicles annually in 2024.

Rivals in the space include Volvo-owned Renault Trucks, Daimler, and Nikola, among others.

We highly recommend ...

For anyone who wanted a Mavic 3 but couldn't quite stomach the high price tag, the DJI Mavic 3 Classic is the flagship DJI drone you've been waiting for. The only significant thing you're giving up is super zoom capability, but that's something of a niche feature on a drone, and many people considering a Mavic will be happy to exchange it for a significant savings. Between its impressive performance, fantastic camera, bug-free software experience, and attractive price point, the Mavic 3 Classic deserves a place in the kit of any drone photography enthusiast.

Earlier this week I fell down the rabbit hole of short films on YouTube, and during that adventure, I came across this gem from eight years ago. Trust me, it still holds up. The premise is fantastically simple: "In a small town in the old west, a lone and weary gunfighter enters a saloon. As he walks through the room surrounded by the people of the town, a voice begins narrating the scene, telling us exactly who this gunfighter is. But unlike every classic western to use the narrator trope, the characters in this film can hear the voice." It's a masterpiece in 8 minutes and 49 seconds.
