I refuse to believe that it's September. I am pretending that I do not see the leaves turning red on the tree outside my window. The sun isn't setting earlier; it's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round. But it is fall, and that means the start of another fraught, pandemic-era school year. Most students are returning to classes without masks, but it seems that two years of virtual or hybrid learning have taken their toll on kids' academic performance. Teachers, who are already underpaid and in high demand, are facing an onslaught of new laws in red states that restrict the way they can talk about race and gender in the classroom. The New York Times has a big opinion package out today about how the nation's education system can move forward.
