The most financially precarious moment our newsroom has ever faced

With just 11 hours left before this month's critical fundraising deadline, I'm nervous about this shortfall: We still have over $150,000 left to reach our $500,000 goal for September.

My name is Roger Hodge, and I am writing to you as The Intercept's new acting editor-in-chief.

I've been with The Intercept for seven years, and I can honestly say that this is the most financially precarious moment our newsroom has ever faced.

The Intercept has always been a collective endeavor, and your generosity has enabled us to expand and deepen our reporting at a time when far too many news outlets have shrunk or gone out of business entirely.

But investigative journalism has always been expensive, and virtually all of our costs are rising with inflation. That's why, with just 11 hours left before this month's critical fundraising deadline, I'm so nervous about this shortfall: We still have over $150,000 left to reach our $500,000 goal for September.

Please take a moment to become a member of The Intercept right now. Whatever you can afford, your gift will ensure The Intercept continues to publish the kind of independent, adversarial journalism that our democracy depends on.

I know you've long been a stalwart reader of our nonprofit investigative journalism, so I wanted to introduce myself and offer a personal explanation for why our team has been sending you so many emails.

The Intercept's reporting is driven by our commitment to justice. Our mission is to expose corruption and injustice wherever we find it, through original investigations and analysis.

That means we don't chase the news cycle, trying to run up clicks and please corporate advertisers. Every story we publish aims to change the world by bringing injustice to light.

Unfortunately, because there's no shortage of public corruption and corporate malfeasance, that means we never run out of work to do.

Since day one, we've had no ads on our website at all. Instead, we rely on your support to power our nonprofit newsroom.

Will you stand with The Intercept today? Become a member and you'll help keep The Intercept going strong for years to come.

Thank you,

Roger Hodge
