Introducing a new kind of 'Sotan

The 'sotan newsletter
Sept. 15, 2022

Hello!

I'm Simone Cazares, the community engagement reporter for MPR News. My job is to tell stories about cultural celebrations, traditions and community champions. Each week I'll share stories that are on my radar and suggestions from Minnesotans across the state.

And I'm Sam Stroozas, a digital producer for MPR News. I work on the best ways to inform and support Minnesotans. I will be sharing must-see events across the state every weekend.

We'll be taking over the 'Sotan.

Got a story you'd like to see covered in your community? An event we should add to our list? We would love to hear about it. Check out the survey below to submit your idea or email your events to: sstroozas@mpr.org.

Here's what we're excited about this week. Have a great weekend, Minnesota!

Simone & Sam
Trans Equity Summit
The annual Trans Equity Summit is happening in Minneapolis on Friday. Programming includes a career and resource fair, opening keynote chat with Diamond Stylz, executive director of Black Trans Women Inc. and a panel featuring local youth and elder leaders, performances, workshops and more. The event is free and open to the public. Organizers encourage anyone interested in furthering trans equity to attend.

Soul line dancing with Tina 'Lady of Line Dance' Jackson
Every Tuesday, Tina Jackson teaches soul line dancing at the Oxford Community Center in St. Paul. Soul line dancing has become a popular form of group exercise. It's a lot like other forms of line dances that are choreographed routines done in a group setting, but the soul comes from the music. People from all walks of life come for the fitness and stay for the community.
Art Hounds recommend fall arts festivals, studio tours and dance
Among the many offerings this weekend, the MPR Art Hounds recommend checking out the River Valley Potters fall tour in the towns of Shafer and Marine on St. Croix, northeast of the Twin Cities, the juried art show at the Lakeville Art Festival and the McKnight Dance Fellows solo performances.
