Bringing in the wild rice harvest: a fall tradition

This is the season for collecting wild rice across northern Minnesota. Ricers have been out in canoes harvesting the crop from lakes and rivers. To preserve that rice, and give it the trademark nutty, smoky flavor involves a process of parching, jigging, winnowing and fellowship.

Here's how to get more free at-home COVID-19 tests. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the shelf life for at-home COVID tests is about four to six months, so tests bought or received at the beginning of the year may be expired.

Minnesota's unemployment rate increases slightly, but Minn. officials say hiring is still strong. Minnesota's unemployment rate ticked up slightly in August to 1.9 percent. That's up from the state's record-low 1.8 percent in July. It's still much lower than the national unemployment rate, which was 3.7 percent in August.

Dred Scott's fight for freedom is a Minnesota story. Dred Scott was a Black man enslaved in the 1800s who sued his slave owners to gain his freedom. His famous case for freedom was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857. Scott died in Missouri 150 years ago this month. The Minnesota connection? He lived for a time at Fort Snelling. Mortgage rates hit six percent, first time since 2008 housing crash. Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates climbed over six percent this week for the first time since the housing crash of 2008, threatening to sideline even more homebuyers from a rapidly cooling housing market.
