TEXAS REPORTS NATION'S FIRST POSSIBLE DEATH FROM MONKEYPOX A severely immunocompromised man in the Houston area has died after being diagnosed with monkeypox, state and local health officials said. He "faced various severe illnesses" and his official cause of death remains pending autopsy results. The virus, which spreads through close contact with an infected person, can be painful, causing a rash and flu-like symptoms, but it is generally not life-threatening. [HuffPost]

MIKHAIL GORBACHEV, LAST LEADER OF THE USSR, DIES AT 91 Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev died following "a severe and prolonged illness," Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital told state-owned Russian news agencies. Celebrated in the West for dismantling the Iron Curtain, Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for brokering international peace and helping to end the Cold War.
