Then came a medical emergency. | | Ryan Naylor didn’t have health insurance. So when he hurt his ankle during kickball practice in May, he treated the injury with ice and an Epsom salts bath. They didn’t work. Turns out there is no surefire home remedy for a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Port Richey resident only agreed to go to a hospital when he couldn’t take the pain anymore. Six days into recovery from his ankle surgery, doctors said he suffered a saddle pulmonary embolism that resulted in emergency surgery and four days in intensive care. He’s now facing mounting medical debt. Naylor is one of some 100 million Americans — including 41% of U.S. adults — who are saddled with health care bills, according to a new survey. Read his story.
