View this email online Goats and Soda editor's note Dr. Dimie Ogoina The ongoing monkeypox outbreak has mystified the world. It's a rare disease with no history of easy spread from human to human. How did it become so prevalent that the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency? At least one doctor was not surprised. In 2017, Dr. Dimie Ogoina, an infectious disease specialist at the Niger Delta University in Nigeria, saw an 11-year-old boy who had a puzzling rash. It turned out to be monkeypox -- and was a harbinger of more cases to come. Ogoina tried to warn the world that monkeypox was being transmitted in new ways. No one listened.
