The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday.

It's the day we've been dreading for years, and expecting since May. In a 6–3 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a 2019 Mississippi law that bans abortion at 15 weeks. Five of the justices, excluding Chief Justice John Roberts, took the dramatic step of insisting that Roe be overruled altogether. My coworkers have been hard at work trying to parse how we got here, what this means, and what will happen next. My colleagues Becca Andrews and James West break down the new decision; Inae Oh summarizes the three liberal justices' dissent; Tim Murphy critiques the minority rule that allowed the Supreme Court to rescind a right that the majority of Americans support; Hannah Levintova contemplates what the decision portends for other rights, like birth control access and same-sex marriage; Noah Kim charts a map of post-Roe abortion access; and I issue a warning about our former vice president. Becca, who has a book about the demise of Roe coming out in October, also wrote a searing scene piece about the anti-abortion advocates celebrating outside a Planned Parenthood in Nashville. Amid all the legal confusion, one thing is certain: Whether they need to procure illegal abortion pills or drain their savings accounts to flee their states, women will continue to terminate their pregnancies in a post-Roe world. —Abigail Weinberg |
