Posted: 20 May 2022 12:54 AM PDT President accuses Russia of 'deliberate attempt to kill as many Ukrainians as possible'; US prepares to ship weapons to Kyiv
Serhiy Gaidai, Ukraine's governor of Luhansk, has given a short update on the situation in Severodonetsk. He writes on Telegram: The Russians are shelling Severodonetsk very powerfully. Up to 15,000 people remain in bomb shelters. Wells in the old districts of the city were preserved to provide people with water. All mobile towers are de-energized. 70% of high-rise buildings are destroyed or damaged, many of them need to be demolished and new ones built. Speaking of "friends", it is notable that US senators were visiting Stockholm on the day the "historic" decision was announced. Not rank-and-file congressmen, but leader of the Senate Republicans Mitch McConnell. Sweden has not yet joined the alliance, but the Americans are already dictating to the Swedish authorities what to say to their people. And this is just a demo of what is in store for them. More than 200 years of neutrality, which guaranteed the Kingdom's security and prosperity, are now history. Continue reading... |
US accuses Russia of weaponising food in Ukraine crisis and holding global supplies ‘hostage’ Posted: 19 May 2022 09:32 PM PDT Blinken calls on Moscow to end blockade of Ukraine ports as Medvedev says Russia is ready to allow the flow of food when sanctions lift The United States has accused Russia of holding the world's food supply hostage amid growing fears of famine in developing countries, as a former Russian president warned that the Kremlin would not release vital grain shipments without an end to western sanctions. Speaking at a UN security council meeting on Thursday, US secretary of state Antony Blinken demanded that Russia lift its blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports and enable the flow of food and fertiliser around the world. Pete Buttigieg, the US transportation secretary, said there was plenty of political will at home and internationally towards cooperating in long-term reconstruction efforts including to buttress existing infrastructure in Ukraine. FBI failing to address white supremacist violence, warns former special agent Posted: 20 May 2022 12:00 AM PDT Michael German, who infiltrated white supremacist groups in the 1990s, says the FBI continues to underplay the scope of the threat The Federal Bureau of Investigation is failing to address the rising scourge of white supremacist violence despite stark warnings that such attacks pose the greatest domestic terrorism threat in the US, a leading authority on law enforcement has told the Guardian. Michael German, a former FBI special agent who infiltrated white supremacist groups in the 1990s, said the bureau continues to underplay the scope of the threat. As a result, communities targeted by white supremacists and far-right militia groups – such as the largely African American neighborhood of Buffalo, New York, where 10 people were killed by a suspected racist gunman this week – are left fatally exposed. 5,000 firefighters tackle wildfires across US south-west Posted: 19 May 2022 09:00 PM PDT High winds have hampered operations as crews fight blazes in Texas, Colorado and New Mexico More than 5,000 firefighters have battled multiple wildland blazes in dry, windy weather across the south-west, including a fire that has destroyed dozens of structures in west Texas and another picking up steam again in New Mexico. Evacuation orders remained in place on Thursday for residents near the wildfires in Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. High winds prevented officials from sending aircraft to drop retardant or water in many places. Continue reading... |
Tucker Carlson tried to use Hunter Biden to get his son into Georgetown Posted: 19 May 2022 09:01 PM PDT Emails reveal the 'extent' which Carlson was willing to turn on Biden's son since the 2020 election, Washington Post says As Tucker Carlson asked Hunter Biden for help getting his son into an elite Washington university in 2014, the Fox News host's wife, Susie, reportedly wrote in an email: "Tucker and I have the greatest respect and admiration for you. Always!" Since the 2020 election, however, Carlson has fueled rightwing attacks on Joe Biden's son, particularly over business affairs in which he allegedly benefited from his father's position. The House passed the bill the day before, so it now goes to Joe Biden to be signed into law. Continue reading... |
Viktor Orbán tells CPAC the path to power is to ‘have your own media’ Posted: 19 May 2022 11:00 PM PDT Hungarian leader also tells Republicans at Budapest conference that shows like Tucker Carlson's should be broadcast '24/7' The Hungarian leader, Viktor Orbán, has told a conference of US conservatives that the path to power required having their own media outlets, calling for shows like Tucker Carlson's to be broadcast "24/7". Stonehenge builders ate undercooked offal, ancient faeces reveals Posted: 19 May 2022 10:00 PM PDT Intestinal parasites recovered from prehistoric rubbish dumps shine light on lives and diet of builders Parasite eggs found in 4,500-year-old human faeces suggest the builders of Stonehenge took part in winter feasts that included the internal organs of animals, researchers have revealed. Stonehenge is thought to have been built around 2,500BC, with evidence suggesting the builders were housed at a settlement known as Durrington Walls, about 2 miles away. The site was predominantly occupied in the winter months, and appears to have been used for between 10 to 50 years. Continue reading... |
Terence Davies on sex, death and Benediction Posted: 19 May 2022 10:00 PM PDT As his Siegfried Sassoon biopic is released, the director opens up about his ill-fated straight romance, being snubbed by Bafta and how it felt to sleep in the bed where his father died The door of Terence Davies's 18th-century cottage is ajar when I arrive, the afternoon sun spilling into the hallway from the village green. Davies' burly manager, John, shows me in, but the first glimpse I get of the man himself is in oils on the living room wall: a large portrait, painted by a neighbour, shows the bespectacled director of Distant Voices, Still Lives looking ivory-haired, pink-faced and pensive. It is likely that he popped out of the womb that way, and that his first words took the form of rhapsodies about Bruckner or the Shipping Forecast. He is 76 now but has given the impression of being old since the day he was born. Rising from an armchair, Davies is wearing a light blue shirt, blue jeans, grey socks and slippers. On his face are the bristly beginnings of frost-white facial hair. "I'm not able to shave," he explains, indicating his right arm hanging limply at his side. Four days earlier, he tripped and fell at home, dislocated his shoulder, and spent 13 hours in the local A&E department. "Having a fall reminds you of your mortality," he sighs. "And your weight. I thought: 'Blimey, I'm heavy!'" He has decided to count his blessings today. "Considering I'm the runt of 10, I've not been too bad where health is concerned. I shall just be like one of those wonderful women in 50s British cinema: I'll be terribly brave, and I'll call myself Muriel." Continue reading... |

Night Sky review – Sissy Spacek and JK Simmons need their own eight-hour show Posted: 19 May 2022 10:00 PM PDT Never mind this sci-fi mystery's plot about a portal to another planet – the scenes where the Hollywood legends play a devoted, ageing couple are so special you resent it when they're off screen Amazon's new series, Night Sky, is really three shows in one. It's a love story about a devoted, ageing couple who are facing their last years together. It's an intergalactic sci-fi mystery involving portals to other planets. And it's an intercontinental thriller involving various secret societies with conflicting interests re: said portals. The first of these works really well. So well, in fact, that when the action moves away from the couple it's hard not to resent it. Much of this is to do with the fact that the pair, retired school teacher Irene York and her carpenter husband Franklin, are played by Sissy Spacek and JK Simmons. Great separately, they are something special together in this. You can feel the Yorks' whole half-century together from the moment they enter a scene. The actors bring their everything to understatement, evoking their enduring love, and the anxieties beginning to nibble round the edges as the tribulations and indignities of old age start to gather. The script is deft, catching the shorthand of long-time partners while never drifting into sentimentality, and in broader terms capturing the intimacy of small-town American life – with all the advantages and disadvantages that come with that, especially if you've never left. Rory McIlroy takes lead at US PGA as Tiger Woods struggles with leg pain Posted: 19 May 2022 01:26 PM PDT
Tiger Woods was suffering enough without being afforded front-row viewing as Rory McIlroy raced into the lead at the 104th staging of the US PGA Championship. As McIlroy was rolling back the years – a 65 is the Northern Irishman's finest start to a major since the 2011 US Open, which he won easily – Woods provided a grim reminder of the scale of his ongoing physical struggles. Woods, playing in just his second event since his right leg was shattered in a car crash in February last year, actually opened brightly at Southern Hills. He birdied the 10th hole, his 1st, and sat two under par after five. Yet by the time Woods limped heavily towards post-round media duties, he had signed for a 74 and was in obvious pain. Draymond Green: Basketball’s biggest troll and the Warriors’ heart and soul Posted: 20 May 2022 01:00 AM PDT This year's NBA playoffs have served as a reminder of how much the provocative power forward sets the tone for the Warriors by being such a pain in the ass to play against Late in Game 5 of the Western Conference semi-finals between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors, the Grizzlies' home crowd sure tried their damnedest to provoke the NBA's No 1 pest. Some 18,000 fans twirled towels at the Warriors bench – and chanted along as the PA played Whoop That Trick, a local anthem. Given the deafening roar inside FedEx Forum, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the Grizzlies who had the upper hand when, in fact, the Warriors led by 46. In the middle of this madness Draymond Green was firmly in his element: bobbing to the beat, waving a towel and really whooping it up. There's been much debate about who's the best remaining player in the NBA playoffs. But there is no doubt about who's most exasperating. For the past decade the Warriors' diminutive power forward has been a 6ft 6in thorn in the side of all who oppose him. In Wednesday night's Western Conference finals opener against the Dallas Mavericks, Green was back to his familiar shenanigans – flexing on the floor after a tough finish at the rim, sprinting crosscourt to block a corner three, lobbying the refs and otherwise being irritating in the Warriors' 112-87 victory at home. Green's official contribution – 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and that chef's kiss closeout block on the Mavericks' Dorian Finney-Smith – barely captures just what a pain in the ass he is to play against. If anything, these playoffs have served as a reminder of how much the 32-year-old former Michigan State standout sets the tone for the Warriors by being such a massive migraine. Continue reading... |
Everton safe after Calvert-Lewin completes epic revival against Palace Posted: 19 May 2022 02:02 PM PDT They would not go. Not the fans who invaded the Goodison Park pitch and sang with raw emotion for 30 minutes after the final whistle. Not the players who joined the choir from the other side of a police cordon. Not Frank Lampard, who disappeared in the throng and re-emerged on the roof of the executive boxes to soak up the acclaim. And not Everton. Their Premier League life was ebbing away after 45 desperate minutes against Crystal Palace. They would not go. Continue reading... |
Novak Djokovic could play Rafael Nadal in French Open quarter-final classic Posted: 19 May 2022 12:13 PM PDT
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were handed their worst scenario in the French Open draw on Thursday after Nadal was drawn into Djokovic's top quarter. As a result, the pair could face each other in the last eight. The extremely unbalanced top half of the men's draw is further complicated by the presence of the other favourite, the 19-year-old supernova Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Nadal and Djokovic in consecutive matches to win the Madrid Open this month. He is projected to face Alexander Zverev, the third seed, in the quarter-finals, meaning Djokovic or Nadal could face Alcaraz or Zverev in the semi-finals. Continue reading... |
The nurses getting huge bills for quitting the NHS – podcast Posted: 19 May 2022 07:00 PM PDT International nurses working for NHS trusts are being trapped in their jobs by clauses in their contracts that require them to pay thousands of pounds if they try to leave. Shanti Das reports Nurses are the backbone of the NHS. For the past two years as Covid-19 gripped the country, people lauded NHS staff as heroes. Many nurses join the NHS from abroad, attracted by the stability of the work, the ethos and a chance for a new life in the UK. But joining the NHS from abroad comes with strings attached. The Observer's Shanti Das tells Nosheen Iqbal that some nurses working for NHS trusts and private care homes are being trapped in their jobs by clauses in their contracts that require them to pay thousands of pounds if they try to leave. In extreme cases, nurses are tied to their roles for up to five years and face fees as steep as £14,000 if they want to change jobs or need to return home early. |
‘We can forgive even bad fathers’: Mia Hansen-Løve on making a movie haunted by Ingmar Bergman Posted: 20 May 2022 12:00 AM PDT When the French director stayed at Bergman's retreat on Fårö island to write a screenplay about a marriage breakdown, she was consumed by her thoughts about the narcissistic genius of the great Swedish director Six years ago, Mia Hansen-Løve went to a little Baltic island to write a screenplay. On the face of it, a terrible idea. Fårö is not just any island, but the place Ingmar Bergman lived, worked, died and is buried. Like a cinephile Goldilocks, Hansen-Løve slept in a bed in his old house, which may have been haunted. "One night I was alone watching a documentary on Bergman. He was talking about ghosts and sitting in his kitchen. Exactly where I was sitting! I freaked out, and fled to a B&B. I've never felt so close to believing in ghosts." Continue reading... |

The federal government made the announcement on Thursday afternoon after signalling for months it intended to block China's flagship telecommunications companies from accessing 5G networks in Canada. Boris Johnson and Partygate: how did PM get only one fine? Posted: 19 May 2022 10:00 PM PDT Experts say it defies logic but Johnson attended gatherings deemed to have breached the rules without himself being fined With the dust settling on the Metropolitan police's long investigation into Covid breaches inside Downing Street, one big question remains: how did Boris Johnson escape with just one fine? Legal experts say it defies logic – and to many voters, it defies common sense too. Continue reading... |
