May 31, 2022 Two people who allege that Derek Chauvin kneeled on their necks years before he killed George Floyd filed suit Tuesday against the former officer and the Minneapolis Police Department. The plaintiffs say that Chauvin restrained them using the same technique that led to Floyd's death. John Pope alleges that Chauvin kneeled on his neck and hit him with a flashlight while responding to a 2017 domestic disturbance call at his home. Pope was 14 at the time, and officers had determined that the situation was under control. Zoya Code makes similar allegations. She says Chauvin pinned her neck to the ground with his knee and wrenched her handcuffed arms behind her head as she lay face down. Pope and Code also say other officers failed to intervene. Both incidents were recorded on police body cameras. Subscribe to our Minnesota Today podcast to get up-to-date Minnesota news twice daily. |
