With one of the most depressing weeks in recent memory winding to a close, I wanted to take some time to spotlight (pun intended) one of my go-to news sources, which turns 150 years old today. The Boston Globe has recently gotten a boost from having been featured in one of the best movies about journalism ever, but even then I think that it's still an underrated outlet. It manages to produce crucial investigations uncovering local corruption that would otherwise elude the attention of the national media. Sadly, though, it's one of the last of a dying breed of legacy newspapers, many of which have struggled to adapt to the vicissitudes of the digital era. It's no secret that a lot of local news outlets are in dire straights right now and that the private equity vultures are circling overhead, eager to feast on the remains of once-proud newsrooms. In an information ecosystem as precarious as the current one, the resilience of papers like the Globe is a cause for celebration. All this to say that tonight, let's all join together in raising a toast to a great paper, still going strong into its 16th decade. Happy 150th, Boston Globe. – Noah Y.
