The 41-cent jump during the first full week of Russia's invasion of Ukraine represents the second-largest increase in average national prices in a week. Traders pushed oil prices even higher on Monday as the U.S. reportedly considered banning Russian oil imports. [AP] MORE THAN 4,000 RUSSIANS ARRESTED PROTESTING UKRAINE INVASION Thousands of Russians in 56 cities turned out Sunday to protest the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to OVD-Info, an independent watchdog group. The protesters could face up to 15 years in prison. Nadya Tolokonnikova, the founder of anti-Kremlin punk activist group Pussy Riot, said it indicates far more people in Russia oppose the war than what has actually been seen. [HuffPost] RUSSIA STEPS UP SHELLING OF RESIDENTIAL AREAS Even as Russia announced a ceasefire starting Monday and the opening of "humanitarian corridors," its armed forces continued to pummel Ukrainian cities. Some of the planned evacuation routes would funnel civilians toward Russia or its ally Belarus. A third round of talks is planned for today. [AP] CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ENTERS THIRD YEAR As people are shedding masks, travel is resuming and businesses are reopening around the globe, the official global death toll from COVID-19 has eclipsed 6 million. Death rates are still highest among people unvaccinated against the virus. And despite its wealth and vaccine availability, the United States is nearing 1 million reported deaths on its own. [AP] |

MARCO RUBIO NOT SORRY FOR POSTING ZELENSKYY PHOTO AMID SECURITY CONCERNS Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) defended tweeting out a photo from an online meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dismissing complaints that participants were asked not to post anything on social media out of concern for the wartime leader's safety. He said he posted it before being told not to, and hasn't taken it down. Cuomo hasn't said he's running for office, but is still sitting on a multimillion dollar campaign war chest he could use to finance another run. [AP] TRUMP FLOATS RIDICULOUS IDEA, GOP HIGH-ROLLERS LAUGH Former President Donald Trump, during a speech to elite Republican donors, said the U.S. could "put the Chinese flag" on fighter jets then use them to "bomb the shit out of Russia," The Washington Post reported. The audience laughed at the comment, which may have been made in jest. [HuffPost] VIOLENCE AT MEXICAN SOCCER MATCH INJURES DOZENS A massive brawl broke out among fans of Mexico's top-division soccer league during Saturday's match between Gallos Blancos in Querétaro and Atlas from Guadalajara. Officials said 26 people required hospitalization. Thirteen of those who remain hospitalized are in fragile or critical condition.
