Good afternoon. President Joe Biden is scheduled to deliver his first State of the Union address tonight amid a series of crises, both domestic and geopolitical. The pressure is high. Biden will have to showcase American strength in the face of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, while nevertheless acknowledging that America's hands are tied militarily (who really wants to intervene with Putin issuing veiled nuclear threats?). Biden will also have to address a country beaten and battered by the coronavirus pandemic and reinvigorate support for a party that seems to lack direction ahead of the midterms. I personally hope that Biden finds room in his speech to address the ever-growing threat of climate change. As I discussed yesterday, I find it difficult to ponder climate change in the face of so many immediate, pressing crises, but it remains one of the central challenges of our time, regardless of whether we keep it top of mind. We've got a crack team on duty tonight to cover Biden's speech, including the one and only Abigail Weinberg. Check in at MotherJones.com for updates. —Noah Y. Kim P.S.
