View this email online by Carol Ritchie First up Samuel Corum/Getty Images Here's what we're following today: One year after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Americans are deeply pessimistic about the future of democracy, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll.  ➡️ Two-thirds of GOP respondents agree with the verifiably false claim that "voter fraud helped Joe Biden win the 2020 election" — a key pillar of the "big lie" that the election was stolen from former President Trump. ➡️ Trump says his supporters weren't behind the Jan. 6 attack. NPR's Lauren Hodges was there when it happened — and she saw otherwise.   Despite major improvements since a violent mob ransacked the Capitol, the Capitol Police still faces troubling security issues, including inadequate staffing, low morale and distrust between rank-and-file and top leaders.  Three retired U.S. generals have warned that another insurrection could occur after the 2024 elections and that the military could instigate it. "In short: We are chilled to our bones at the thought of a coup succeeding next time," they wrote in a recent Washington Post op-ed. Twitter has banned the personal account of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for "repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy." Omicron is spreading at lightning speed, and scientists are trying to figure out why. They have found some clues to its success. "The rules haven't changed," says one epidemiologist. "It's just the margin for error has got a lot smaller." Libraries have always been places where people can get information.
