We're just a day away from putting 2021 in the books, and here at The Verge we've been recapping our favorite apps, games, and entertainment of the year. Not all of the apps and services we've highlighted are on sale, but what better way to cap off our final newsletter of the year than by digging up the very best savings we can find on at least some of our faves?
We hope these deals are just a small way of saying thank you for reading and supporting The Verge in 2021, and for being a newsletter subscriber. We're looking forward to helping you find the best deals on tech and the latest gadgets throughout 2022. May you have a happy and healthy New Year. Be safe, be well, and keep saving!
Let's kick things off with discounts on games for a console that is a little easier to get your hands on these days. Nintendo is running its Indie World Holiday Sale until 11:59PM PT on December 31st, which includes picks from our roundup of the best games for the Nintendo Switch OLED. Right now, you can pick up excellent titles like Boyfriend Dungeon, this summer's dreamy role-playing action-adventure game, for just $16.99 ($3 off). Or, if you prefer a laid-back, chill-vibe twist on the heyday of Group B rally racing, Art of Rally is just $18.74 ($6.25 off). Lastly, Hades, the biggest indie darling to come to the Switch in 2020 and remain a force in 2021, is just $16.24 ($8.05). $16 $25 36% off Prices taken at time of publishing. Hades is a roguelike, action-RPG developed by Supergiant Games that's available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles in addition to the Nintendo Switch and PC. Read our review. Next-gen gaming is not for the feint of heart or light of wallet. Sony's PS5 console remains hard to get, and some of its most noteworthy titles launched at a higher $69.99 price point. This includes three excellent picks that made our 2021 list of the best PS5 titles to pick up. But the good news is that you can currently get both Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal for $49.99 ($20 off) at Best Buy. Or, if you're looking for an even better deal, Demon's Souls is on sale for just $39.99 ($30 off). All of these are excellent examples of what a next-gen console like the PS5 is capable of, with excellent graphics and minimal load times. They're great games, too! $50 $70 29% off Prices taken at time of publishing. Insomniac Games' latest adventure in the Ratchet & Clank series is the most fun entry yet. It's also the first to launch on the PS5. Read our review.
Recommending games for Microsoft's Xbox family of consoles is often easy: just get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Bam! Right there, you've just covered most bases. And while Game Pass does offer a great value if you like the idea of playing games on a subscription service — one that's currently available as a discounted, three-month subscription at Eneba for $30.92 ($15 off) — some people prefer to own their games. Thankfully, if you prefer physical copies for your Xbox Series X, a few options from our guide to the best games for your new Xbox are now discounted at Amazon. Right now, for instance, you can pick up open-world racer Forza Horizon 5 for $54.99 or the expansive Microsoft Flight Simulator for just $47.99. $48 $60 20% off Prices taken at time of publishing. Flight Simulator has long been one of the best and most realistic ways to imagine what it'd be like to pilot a small plane or jet. The latest version features 20 planes that you can fly around the globe, allowing you to see over 2 million rendered cities from overhead. Read our review.
No gaming platform offers as many deals and sales on a daily basis than PC. These are highlighted when Steam runs its seasonal sales, as it is now with the Winter Sale that runs through January 4th. There are excellent deals to be had, including those on new titles we featured in our 10 Great Games For Your New Gaming PC list, such as the horror-themed card game Inscryption ($15.99), Psychonauts 2 ($38.99), and Back 4 Blood ($35.99). Some of these are also available on the Epic Games Store, where you can take an additional $10 off the price thanks to Epic Games' holiday sale coupon. $6 $20 70% off Prices taken at time of publishing. Inscryption is a rogue-like card game mixed with an escape room that's blanketed in a horror-themed aesthetic. The ever-changing story keeps you guessing just as you think you're figuring it out. Read our review. Deals on streaming services can be a bit hard to come by outside of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you're in the market for a new streaming device and you're not yet a subscriber to HBO Max, Google has the perfect bundle for you. Right now, the latest Chromecast with Google TV is on sale with three months of ad-free HBO Max for $64.99. That is the equivalent of paying for the Chromecast and a month of HBO Max, adding even more value to our current pick for best streaming device, which also offers a tidy user interface and support for both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
Ninety days is plenty of time to binge some of the best there is to offer from HBO Max, like The Matrix Resurrections, Succession, and other content covered in our list of the best TV shows and movies from 2021 to stream on HBO Max. $65 $95 32% off Prices taken at time of publishing. The Chromecast with Google TV introduces new software that brings together recommendations from all of your favorite streaming services. It also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
