Journalism made possible by you

Dear Observer Reader,

This summer, for the first time in a decade, the Texas Observer presented to the world a new logo, a new print magazine, and a new website. I never dreamed I'd get to be a part of something this exciting at one of the top magazines in Texas, let alone have a hand in leading it.

Our redesign is a huge step forward for the publication. The redesign has been a great collaborative effort full of heart and careful attention to detail since I first arrived at the Observer in January, 2020. With its clean new framework, subtle colors, and attention to photography, the new website is a platform worthy of the impressive, important, and thoughtful investigative work that our staff excels at.

Now let me swoon over that very editorial staff for a moment. As the digital editor here at the Observer, I have the honor of producing every story online, working on headlines, formatting copy, and finding the right art to go along with them. On a daily basis, I learn something new from every piece. Each reporter and editor on the Observer staff is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about their beat.

In my time here, I've been blown away by concepts presented by some of the best journalists in the state. Reporter Gus Bova's stories are always some of the most thoughtful and illuminating pieces about underserved or wronged communities, especially his work covering  homelessness. Lise Olsen writes chilling tales exposing corruption in all corners of our government, like her story "Undetected" that highlights how homicides in Texas continue to go unsolved. And for months, Sophie Novack and Michael Barajas poured over documents from the Texas Rangers, publishing a heartbreaking investigation on the rise in preventable deaths of people held in Texas jails.

This work is only made possible by our readers. Stories on our website are always free. We don't believe in paywalling our content. But we need your help to continue expanding our staff to include new beats affecting Texas, to keep our work moving forward, to offer y'all a beautiful magazine, and to help our stories reach as far as they can.

Join today and I promise you'll be an even more thoughtful person, knowledgeable citizen, and overall better Texan for it.

Thank you kindly,
Danielle Lopez
Digital Editor
