Happy New Year! Here at Mother Jones, we've spent a lot of time looking back at all of the tragic and bizarre things that happened in 2021. But the past is behind us, and I'd like to take a moment to outline some things we have to look forward to in 2022. • Tomorrow, works from 1926 will be entered in the public domain, meaning they'll be free to distribute and share. Instead of heading to the bookstore or library to pick up a copy of The Sun Also Rises or Winnie-the-Pooh, you'll likely be able to read them for free online. • There will be plenty of new things to read, as well. 2022 will see new releases from Hanya Yanagihara, Isabel Allende, Elena Ferrante, and Zadie Smith, to name just a few. • If you prefer watching to reading, you're in luck. This year, there will be new movies from Jordan Peele (Nope), Olivia Wilde (Don't Worry Darling), and Robert Eggers (The Northman, featuring Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Ralph Ineson, and—wait for it—Björk). On the small screen, expect new seasons of The Crown, Atlanta, Russian Doll, and Better Call Saul. • The James Webb Space Telescope, which is currently hurtling through the cosmos, is expected to release its first images of distant realms in June 2022. • Whether you're looking forward to them or dreading them, the midterm elections will take place in November. The United States will decide on its 118th Congress, using redistricting maps based on the 2020 census. President Biden still has quite a few items to check off of his legislative agenda before then, including the Build Back Better Act. It will be an exciting year politically, and we'll keep you posted every step of the way. That's all I got. I hope you'll enjoy ringing in the new year, and I'll catch you back here next week. —Abigail Weinberg
