| Hi there, Today marks the start of the Texas Observer's fall membership drive. For the next 14 days, you'll be hearing from me and some of my colleagues on the editorial side about the work that we do. This is our way of reminding you that the Observer is a reader-supported organization—and, more to the point, that we need you to make our work happen.
For almost 70 years, the Observer has been a singular voice in Texas. As a nonprofit news organization, we strive to make Texas a more equitable place by exposing injustice through investigative journalism, narrative storytelling, commentary, and cultural coverage. We have no shareholders or owners and we don't answer to corporate interests.
This means that we rely on the generosity of you, our readers, to pay our bills and remain independent.
And the work we do takes money and time. From cataloging the costs of cleaning up abandoned oil wells in the Permian Basin to investigating Texas' failure to prosecute public integrity and corruption cases, and exposing the lack of federal legislation to protect Indigenous children from chronic child abuse, the Observer's mission compels our reporters to dig deeply into these issues and produce reporting that holds those in power to account.
