Enbridge says Line 3 replacement complete, opens Friday

MPR News PM Update

Sept. 29, 2021

Enbridge says its new Line 3 oil pipeline will be complete and in service on Friday. It marks the end of more than eight years of work on the controversial project.

The new pipeline replaces a 60-year-old line that was corroding and required extensive maintenance. It travels a different route across the northern third of the state, and allows Enbridge to transport about twice as much oil as the old pipeline. The line carries oil to Enbridge's terminal in Superior, Wis. From there it will be shipped to refineries in the Midwest and beyond.

The project was completed despite major opposition from environmental and tribal groups. Two legal challenges are still ongoing to try to stop Line 3. Find more information in our FAQ.
