Jeuel Bannister Esmacher was a 19-year-old band director when the Department of Defense contacted her with the request: "Come at once; we could use you in Washington." Her role in a top secret project during WWII would one day land her in the pages of a New York Times Bestseller and earn her South Carolina's highest civilian honor.

The FAA has awarded $951,038 to Greenville Spartanburg International Aiport, as well as $333,333 to Anderson Regional Airport for taxiway updates at both facilities. The grants are part of a $776 million FAA investment in airport infrastructure across the country announced Aug. 24.
