We're two days out from the Fourth of July, and the United States Anti-Doping Agency has offered one less reason to feel patriotic this coming weekend: Sha'Carri Richardson, the star sprinter ahead of this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, has been suspended for one month after testing positive for marijuana, disqualifying Richardson from competing in her signature race, the women's 100-meter. In an interview with the Today show this morning, Richardson apologized for failing the drug test. She explained that she had used marijuana in Oregon last month to cope with learning about her mother's sudden death from a reporter. "To hear that information coming from a complete stranger, it was definitely triggering," Richardson said. "It was definitely nerve-shocking." "Don't judge me," she continued. "Because I am human. I'm you. I just happen to run faster." Before anyone does go on ignoring Richardson's words and, well, proceed to judge her, let's get two critical facts out of the way here. First, recreational marijuana has been legal to use in Oregon since 2015. Second, the US Anti-Doping Agency's claim that cannabis is a potential performance-enhancing drug is widely disputed, with study after study finding no evidence to back the rather outdated premise that stigmatizes weed. As many have pointed out, today's decision comes as the International Swimming Federation banned swim caps from Soul Cap, which designs swim caps for natural Black hair. As Jemele Hill puts it, "Between Sha'Carri Richardson and this, the Olympics really are sending quite the message to black women." —Inae Oh He is the company. BY RUSS CHOMA

SOME GOOD NEWS, FOR ONCE
Earlier this week, we ran a beautiful series of photographs from Los Angeles. It showcases how residents are using previously industrial spaces for greenery and parks. As the writer says:
One park, they also write, in a lovely turn of phrase, showcases a “vegetable oasis in an urban landscape.” You should go take a look here. Interspersed are nice stories throughout, drawn from chats with parkgoers. I hope that cheers you up for the long weekend. —Jacob Rosenberg Did you enjoy this newsletter?
