| Good morning! There is very little I love more than internet drama, especially when it involves a bit of mystery. Last week, that's exactly what I got when I heard that hundreds of thousands of TikTok users were convinced that singer Bella Poarch had plagiarized her new song "Build a B*tch" – from none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Delighted by the idea of an up-and-coming pop star borrowing from one of the classical greats, I had to know more. But the "evidence," if you can call it that, was insubstantial. TikTokers played audio from Poarch's song, followed by audio of a piano piece they claimed Mozart had written in 1768. And indeed, the two tracks sounded similar. Too similar. And, to my ears, there was no way Mozart could have written either one. Something was up. So what was the deal? My suspicions were confirmed when writer Gavia Baker-Whitelaw published a piece for The Daily Dot titled "No, Bella Poarch didn't steal her song 'Build a B*tch' from Mozart." As it turns out, the piano piece being propped up as a Mozart original was not a classical piece at all. Instead, it was… wait for it… …A piano cover of Poarch's own song. Plot twist! Anyway, as Baker-Whitelaw noted in her article, pop stars have been sampling and remixing classical music since the beginning of pop itself – so even if Poarch had been sampling Mozart, she'd be in good company. I'll put some pop tracks that borrow from classical at the end of this email, but first, here's what you have to look forward to on CRB this week. | This month, WCRB In Concert stays close to home, with concerts recorded and streamed from GBH's Fraser Performance Studio throughout the pandemic. First up, on WCRB In Concert with the Naumberg Orchestral Concerts, it's a night of French music with violinist Lara St. John, pianist Marc-André Hamelin, and the Ulysses Quartet! Hear Debussy, Ravel, and Chausson, Sunday at 7pm. | While we are pleased to offer episodes of WCRB In Concert on demand, due to rights restrictions we must remove content from time to time. Here are two broadcasts to listen to now, before they expire:
| BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA | Saturday at 8pm, hear superstar violinist Hilary Hahn play Dvoràk's vibrant Violin Concerto in an encore BSO broadcast from 2017! | This week on The Bach Hour, Masaaki Suzuki leads Bach Collegium Japan in a short but critical chapter in the long narrative told by the composer through a series of works, and Alina Ibragimova performs the Violin Concerto in E. Listen on demand now.
Also on demand: mandolinist Chris Thile, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and bassist Edgar Meyer each bring an astounding range of backgrounds to their musical projects, but at the foundation of it all is Bach. | Saturday at 5pm, join us for the final concert of the Atterbury House Sessions, featuring the series' founder and organizer, violinist Lara St. John! Joined by harpist Bridget Kibbey and bassist Eddy Khaimovich, St. John plays Bach and a variety of Eastern European, Celtic, and Cuban tunes, streaming live on our website. | - Step into Laura Carlo's garden and enjoy a beautiful bouquet of classical pieces inspired by flowers!
- In our latest roundup, the Bodega Boys visit Yo-Yo Ma, early recording technology brings us the sounds of turn-of-the-century Japan, and a local ballet company dances "Sleeping Beauty," streaming on YouTube.
- Prog rock and French dance pop reinterpretations of classical favorites are just two of the tracks you'll find in our epic May music favorites! This edition of Instant Replay also features a bit of Broadway flavor, some Miles Davis, the ubiquitous Carly Rae Jepsen, and a whole lot more – listen to the playlist here.
