One of my uncles always tells a story about how, when he was a kid, his mom would tell him she could see around corners. They would be out walking someplace, only for his mom to tell him the details of some vehicle or person that was about to appear around a bend in the road. A few seconds later and, sure enough, that vehicle or person would appear, exactly as described. Magic, surely?
Of course, it wasn't magic at all: His mom — my grandmother — was just taller than he was, and could see over walls and other obstacles that he wasn't able to. What appeared to be some kind of superpower was really just about having a superior vantage point. Now, researchers from the U.K.'s University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and University College London want to give every car on the planet the ability to see around corners. And, with genuine magic being in short supply, they've come up with a way to shift the world's vantage points using a combination of lidar, augmented reality, and crowdsourcing.
If it works as promised — and that's a big if — it could totally transform the way we drive by allowing drivers to "see through" objects to alert them of potential hazards, without distracting them in the process. |

If you go to Amazon looking for a new charger or a pair of headphones today, your options will be limited. People have started noticing that chargers, cables, speakers, and headphones — likely among other categories — from popular companies are either unavailable for shipping or gone from the platform entirely. Aukey and Mpow, extremely well-known companies with popular products, have all but disappeared from Amazon.
And we have a good idea of the reason: Fake reviews.
Online safety advocate SafetyDetective uncovered a massive trove of data pointing to wide-reaching pay-for-play review systems purportedly focused on China-based phone and computer accessory companies that primarily sell on Amazon. The leak exposed a system of companies paying to generate real-looking — but completely falsified — reviews for new products. The goal is simple: Shoot up the Amazon rankings for having a high number of reviews and an average rating, which starts the waterwheel of purchases and real reviews. |

Sony expects to struggle to meet the demands for PS5 into 2022, according to a new report from Bloomberg. This news comes by way of Sony chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki, who warned investors that PS5 shortages will likely continue for the foreseeable future.
Totoki said "I don't think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PS5 next year, our supply wouldn't be able to catch up with demand," Totoki said, according to Bloomberg. |
