You can pretty much forget about a nonpartisan commission to investigate the mayhem at the US Capitol this past January 6. The House voted to approve a commission last week, but Senate Republicans are unlikely to scrounge up the 10 votes needed to begin debating the legislation in their chamber, let alone approve it in a vote this afternoon. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who once spoke so eloquently about former President Trump's responsibility for the rioting—albeit before voting not to impeach—now calls the commission "extraneous" and has been rallying his Republican colleagues to vote against it.
